APRIL 12TH :: NYC

What better way to kick of the City Sandwich Tour then a quick visit to NYC. I don’t know about you but when we think of sandwiches here, only one word comes to mind – DELI.
Whether you’re looking for hot pastrami on rye, corned beef or even matzo ball soup these picks won’t do you wrong.
KATZ’S DELICATESSEN
Since 1888, Katz’s Deli in the Lower East Side at 205 East Houston Street has been serving up tons (literally) of the only hand-carved meats in the city. Beyond a certain scene in “When Harry Met Sally” …. Katz’s is even more well know for dishing out sandwiches so large that they actually dare you to finish one. Don’t believe us … Google it. They carve up 5,000 pounds of corned beef, 2,000 pounds of salami and 12,000 hot dogs every week.
MAY WE RECOMMEND :: KATZ’S HOT PASTRAMI
$14.95 … but as their menu says “smoked to juicy perfection and hand carved to your specifications (ask for Mayo at your own peril)”
2ND AVE. DELI
It might not be located on 2nd Avenue anymore … But since 2007 this re-opened deli at 162 East 33rd Street (between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue) has been plating family-friendly fare in the spirit of Abe Lebewohl, the original founder who was murdered in 1996.
MAY WE RECOMMEND :: ANY THREE DECKER SANDWICH
But for the adventurous the #3. Simple Tongue, Corned Beef, Salami, Coleslaw and Russian Dressing. And as they say “We cure our own Corned Beef and Tongue and think you’ll agree when you taste them…There’s no finer anywhere.”
CARNEGIE DELI
Located in midtown on 7th Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets, the Carnegie Deli has one simple motto, “If you can finish your meal, we’ve done something wrong.”
With most sandwiches coming in with AT LEAST one pound or more of meat, they sure do their part. And if that’s not enough they also have one pound slices of cheesecake for order.
The only thing to watch out for is their cash only policy, $3 surcharge to share the huge sandwiches and surly waiters who like to impart some of the gruffness of New York onto visitors.
